Hair highlights add a fresh and modern effect to your look. Just as with skincare, you should care for your hair so that you will have the best looking highlights. If you plan on adding color or highlights to your hair yourself, here are a few tips to help you get the best results for your new hairdo.

When you are preparing for your new color, you can begin with your haircare. You should

use a clarifying shampoo on your hair at least two days before you color.

If you wish, instead of using the brushes that come with your highlights kit, you can use flat ½ and ¼ inch acrylic brushes available at any art store. These are artist's brushes and will give you a better handle on your coloring and more natural looking results. You can also pick up a set of tight fitting latex gloves to ensure a proper fit to protect your skin.

Begin applying the highlights from the hair on the back of your head and proceed towards the front. If you color this way, you won't smudge the pieces in the front while trying to reach the hairs in the back.

Apply the highlight color only to the top layers of the hair.

Never go three shades lighter than your natural color. Be aware of your skincares and don't let any chemicals touch your skin. When you are finished with your highlights, schedule a night out with the girls to show off your new look!
